Mountain biking from your doorstep

Marama Point · Lake Rotorua · Private sale

Rotorua is where New Zealand mountain biking lives. This furnished lakefront home is about 20 minutes from the trailhead, with your own berth out front and a garage the bikes live in between trips.

Most riders spend eleven months a year planning one week here.

Whakarewarewa Forest — "the Redwoods" to riders — has more than 200 km of purpose-built singletrack, from Grade 1 family loops to Grade 6 lines, under century-old Californian redwoods on free-draining volcanic soil that rides year-round. It is a Crankworx World Tour stop and, with Skyline's gondola-assisted park across town, one of the most complete riding destinations in the Southern Hemisphere.

Every March Crankworx fills the town with riders for five days. Then they fly home and start counting down. Marama Point is the other option: a three-bedroom furnished home on the northern shore of Lake Rotorua, your boat at the berth in front, your bikes in a high-stud garage on its own title.

Getting here with a bike

• Singapore–Auckland: non-stop, about 10 hours. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane–Auckland: about 3–4 hours.

• Auckland–Rotorua: a 3-hour drive, or a short domestic flight. Rotorua Airport is about 15 minutes from Marama Point.

• Most airlines carry a boxed or bagged bike as checked baggage; check your fare's size and weight allowance.

• Or don't bring one: hire a good bike at Waipa or Te Pūtake o Tawa — or keep your own in the garage here and fly in with a helmet and shoes.
