Bay of Plenty Region – Where Nature, Culture, and Opportunity Meet

A Name Rooted in Generosity

The Bay of Plenty was named in 1769 by British explorer Captain James Cook, who was struck by the abundance of food and hospitality offered by Māori communities along the coast. In contrast to the nearby Poverty Bay, Cook observed “a great deal of cultivated land laid out in regular enclosures,” and noted the region’s fertility and vibrant population. The Māori name for the bay, Te Moana-a-Toitehuatahi, honors the ancestor Toi-te-huatahi, whose descendants have lived in the region for generations.

Geography & Climate

Located on the eastern coast of New Zealand’s North Island, the Bay of Plenty stretches from the Coromandel Peninsula to Cape Runaway, encompassing golden beaches, lush forests, and volcanic landscapes. Inland, the region features mountain ranges like the Kaimai and Raukūmara, and geothermal wonders around Rotorua.
The climate is mild and sunny, with the Bay of Plenty boasting one of the warmest and sunniest climates in New Zealand. This makes it ideal for year-round outdoor activities, agriculture, and relaxed coastal living.
